Our hybrid option combines distance learning with residential instruction. Students pursuing a Hybrid M.S. will complete 12 credit hours in their first year online and then the remaining 18 credit hours in residence on the Bloomington campus. The Hybrid M.S. is a two-year program.

Application Instructions

For admissions consideration to the program, you will need to submit an online application (e-App).

Please select “Data Science” as your Academic Program and "Data Science MS (Online)" as your Academic Plan.

To complete your application, follow the Hybrid MS Checklist below:

  • Statement of Purpose

    Upload a Statement of Purpose (SOP) in PDF format under the “Department Information” tab on your online application (e-App).

    Please indicate at the top of your statement which program you are seeking admission to: Hybrid M.S. in Data Science - Personal Statement. Your statement should be approximately 500 words long and clearly explain your academic background, career goals, and aspirations for applying to this program. Please be concise, authentic, and sincere - your statement will be evaluated by the Data Science Admissions Committee for preparation and overall fit.

  • Résumé

    Upload your résumé/CV in PDF format under the Department Information tab on your online application (e-App).

  • Letters of Recommendation

    Provide contact information for three (3) academic or professional references under the “Department Information” tab on your online application (e-App).

    Select recommenders who can attest to your abilities, accomplishments, strengths, knowledge, and experience. Your recommenders will receive an electronic request to write their letter AFTER you have submitted your online application. Be sure to submit your application well in advance of the deadline, in order to give your recommenders time to get their letters submitted.

  • Transcripts and Degree Certifications

    Upload scanned copies of all official transcript(s), mark sheet(s), and degree certificate(s) in PDF format under “Department Information” tab on your online application (e-App). Please be aware we require scanned copies of transcripts with six (6) credits or more of coursework. 

    You are also welcome to send your academic records as pdf attachments or electronically through a secure site (Parchment, eScript, National Student Clearinghouse, etc.) to datasci@indiana.edu. Please do not provide official paper copies for the admissions process.

    NOTE: Official academic transcripts and certifications will be required for final admission.

  • GRE Scores

    Report official GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores taken within the past five (5) years. Please request your scores directly through ETS.org.

    To report GRE scores, use the Institution Code of 1324 for Indiana University. If you would like to use a departmental code, we recommend 0000 for Undecided or 0403 for Data Processing.

    While we do not have a minimum requirement for the GRE, competitive applicants should have minimum scores of Quantitative - 160, Verbal - 153, and Analytical Writing - 4.0.

  • TOEFL Scores (for international students)

    Report official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores taken within the past two (2) years. Please request your scores directly through ETS.org.

    While we do not have a minimum requirement for the TOEFL, competitive applicants should have minimum score of 100 on the Internet-based test.

    NOTE: Effective August 1, 2016 – IELTS scores are not accepted for admissions to our graduate programs.



Hybrid Consideration Statement

Submit a Hybrid Consideration Statement as a PDF to the Data Science Graduate Office at datasci@indiana.edu. Please indicate at the top of your statement: Hybrid Consideration Statement. Your statement should be approximately 200 words long and clearly explain why you wish to pursue the hybrid program over our online or residential programs.
