Business

The true impact of information technology on business can be measured in the near-tripling of U.S. gross domestic product from 1990 to 2008. It has changed the way companies handle everything from processing payments to communicating with customers. Email, ecommerce, the Internet, websites and mobile computing are only a handful of technologies that have profoundly impacted business.

This purpose of this cognate is to introduce you to the fundamentals of business—marketing, finance, operations and management—and how information technology informs modern-day business at all levels.  For example, consider how online retail businesses use sales data to help influence future purchases. Creating and analyzing data provides a useful tool for businesses that can influence strategies and decision-making.

If you’re interested in working in private industry, starting your own business, or pursuing a graduate business degree, consider this cognate. It prepares you to anticipate how changes in technology will offer new opportunities for businesses in every industry. Students interested in graduate school should consider the MSIS, MBA, or further study in informatics.
