Shei honored with Staff Merit Award
Shing-Shong “Bruce” Shei, a senior large systems specialist at the School of Informatics and Computing, has been honored with one of the 2016 Professional Staff Merit Awards from the Office of the Provost. Shei was recognized for his tireless efforts to aid faculty with IT issues in a friendly and timely fashion.
“It is simply Bruce’s nature to be pleasant, helpful, and dedicated,” says Donna Arkins, the director of information technology at the School of Informatics and Computing. “Bruce’s high standards, work ethic, experience, and approachability make him the perfect candidate for the award.”
The Staff Merit Awards are presented annually to Indiana University staff, and they honor outstanding service to IUB. Shei has been nominated for the award in the past, and the people he serves are thrilled he has been selected to receive the recognition this year.
“It is extraordinary that someone could have had such an impact on my work,” says David Crandall, an associate professor of informatics and computing. “Bruce has directly impacted me and my lab because he has taken care of so many details for us, freeing us to focus on research and not on IT issues and problems. Perhaps more than any other IU staff or faculty member, I thank Bruce and his colleagues for making my six years here so productive.”
Faculty members are amazed by Shei’s responsiveness at all hours and willingness to go the extra mile to make sure their issues are solved as soon as possible. His own experience as a student has shown him the importance of quality and quick IT response.
“I came to IU as a graduate student in the Computer Science department in 1982,” Shei says. “I realize the important role the system staff play in supporting and supplying the rich and diverse environment to help faculty and students do their research and daily work.”
Shei was stunned by the honor.
“It’s such an honor and such a joy,” Shei says. “Working in such a diverse and highly demanding environment is not easy. I really feel honored that my work over the years has been recognized.”
Shei began working in the then-Computer Science department in 1991 and was part of the merger that created SoIC. He received his award from Provost Lauren Robel Dec. 12 in a ceremony celebrating the award.
