Before you can improve life, you have to understand it.

Bioinformatics does both by combining several disciplines—including life sciences, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, computer science, medical sciences, and statistics—and using massive amounts of data.

Also known as computational biology, this fast-growing field focuses on the modeling, discovery, and management of biological data. In addition to improving biology and the medical sciences, bioinformatics is generating opportunities for burgeoning industries such as personalized medicine.

More than half of our graduate students contribute directly to multidisciplinary research projects, working with faculty and research centers at Indiana University and beyond. As a student here, you can participate in research on frontier topics such as:

  • Analysis of next-generation sequencing data

M.S. in Bioinformatics

A two-year professional program for students interested in bioinformatics careers or continuing on to a Ph.D.

Bioinformatics track of the Ph.D. in Informatics

Prepares students for careers as academic researchers or life science professionals through collaboration with industry and research institutions

Doctoral students in computer science can also conduct research in bioinformatics and/or complete a bioinformatics minor.
