Outreach
Our students, faculty, and staff are passionate about solving problems, and not just by using technology. We’re committed to helping people in need, especially in and around Bloomington, through community service and outreach.
Just ask John Tweedie, our director of administration and finance. Each December, John’s office fills up with gifts for needy teens—gifts that are donated by faculty, staff, and students at the school. These presents are part of our annual involvement with Stepping Stones, a Bloomington nonprofit that offers transitional housing and support services to homeless 16- to 20-year-olds.
And we recently opened Serve IT, a community information technology clinic housed right here at the School of Informatics and Computing. Faculty-supervised teams of student interns work with nonprofits to develop and work through a strategic IT plan. Providing students with unique real-world learning experiences while helping local nonprofits. That's the Serve IT model.
Here are more ways we’re reaching out:
- Students and faculty/staff competed in a month-long step-a-thon, resulting in more than 8.4 million steps taken and a $1,000 donation to Stepping Stones (the students won, BTW).
- During the Boys and Girls Club’s Tech Week, we led nine programs that taught kids to build their own Web pages, gave them a chance to play with robots, and more.
- Our Informatics and Computing Student Association organized a golf scramble to raise money for breast cancer research.
- Faculty, staff, and grad students raised $5,000 for a staff member whose husband had cancer.
- We teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a needy family.
