Practical Thoughts: Mixing theory with real-world applications for the future.

The study of books has always fascinated to Kathryn, so library science seemed like a natural career. She was drawn to SoIC’s MLS program because of the variety of courses offered and the academic community that surrounds program and School.  The top ten ranking by US News and World Report and interesting and highly regarded specializations didn’t hurt, either.

Now that she’s here, she’s learned that one of the best things about the program is the emphasis on student learning and understanding.

“The professors are engaged with students on multiple levels. The courses are teaching us the theoretical foundations while pairing it with practical knowledge of management, user services, and technology requirements,” she says. “Knowing why librarians do things and how to approach any situation are important skills to have for future employment.”

She might be earning her MLS right now, but she plans on learning for the rest of her life. The MLS program instills and fosters the importance of life-long learning in its students.
