At the School of Informatics and Computing, innovation starts with our very existence.
Our rare combination of programs—including informatics, computer science, library science, and information science—makes our school one of the largest, broadest, and most accomplished of its kind.

Our extensive programs are united by a focus on information and technology. These rapidly evolving fields demand new ideas, new discoveries, new applications—the types of innovations our faculty develop and the kinds of complex problems our students learn to solve.
Library science, information science, and computer science have long histories at Indiana University. The highly-ranked (8th nationally by US News and World Report) School of Library and Information Science was founded in 1951 and has alumni that have influenced organizations from the Library of Congress to Google. The Computer Science Department was founded in 1971. Computer science alumni have gone on to stellar careers in higher education while others have founded influential tech companies.
The founding of the School of Informatics in 2000 added a new dimension to technology education and research at IU. The School of Informatics was the first school of its kind—an innovative, interdisciplinary program where technology fuels discoveries in fields ranging from music to microbiology. We offered the first Ph.D. in Informatics as well as one of the first master’s degrees in cybersecurity. The young informatics alumni base is already making an impact around the world.
Capitalizing on the ever-changing information and technology world, IU combined the Computer Science Department with the School of Informatics in 2005. In 2013, the School of Library and Information Science joined our School, which then became the School of Informatics and Computing.
Our journey began in 1951, but with the newly-expanded School of Informatics and Computing, we’re just getting started. As the world explores the frontiers of the Information Age, we are leading the way. We are innovating. It’s what we do.
